Hospitality
Half of all food and drinks expenditure in Portugal goes to eating out. With close to 100,000 restaurant and hospitality establishments, the culinary tourism industry is one of the Portuguese economy’s most dynamic. The Portuguese visit restaurants an estimated thirty times a year, while the European average is just fifteen. Hotels, restaurants and catering generate annual turnover on the order of 15 billion euros in a country that had more than 35 million overnight stays in 2009. (*)
